The Gospel = The Cross

The power of the cross! What a wonderous work Jesus accomplished at Calvary. The gospel equals the cross! The cross bought us reconcilation to God! Do you see the sin debt paid in full? Continue in the faith!

“The Gospel = The Cross”

Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. :17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "The just shall live by faith."

The gospel of Christ is the power of God to salvation for everyone! The true gospel reveals righteousness by faith in Jesus Christ. Righteousness by definition is being reconciled back to God. Many have heard the story of Adam and Eve and how their sin separated them from the holy God. The perfect union between God and man was broken. The gospel declares that reconciliation is possible exclusively through Jesus Christ.

Isaiah 53:11 He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities. 53:12 Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.

Jesus going to the cross was the labor that God was satisfied with. As God’s wrath was poured out on His Son, His holiness was appeased. There was now a sacrifice that was so great it could pay the penalty for sin. So great was the sacrifice it could make the unclean holy. We call it imputed righteousness.

1 Corinthians 1:17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect. 18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

The message of the cross is so great; Do you understand the last line of verse 18? To us who are being saved the message of the cross is the power of God. The cross is not the wooden beam put up for the décor of the church. The cross is the message of power over sin! The message of the cross is an exclusive trust and confidence in the finished work of the cross. When Jesus spoke those words “it is finished” it was a declaration that Jesus paid the full price for the sin of the world. Indeed the lamb of God had taken away the sin of the world.

1 Corinthians 1:23 but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

Without the crucified Christ there is no reconciliation; however Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God is now manifested.

2 Corinthians 11:2 For I am jealous for you with godly jealousy. For I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. 3 But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 4 For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted; you may well put up with it!

Faith in Jesus Christ has been spurned by some as just to easy; I share in the Apostle Paul concern that so many have been turned away from the simplicity that is found in Christ alone.

1 John 4:14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world. 15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.

1 John 5:1 Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him.

Galatians 1:3 Grace to you and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, 4 who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5 to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. 6 I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7 which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.

Divine influence teaches us the will of God was fulfilled at the cross of Jesus Christ. Jesus gave Himself for our sins that so we can be deliver from this present evil age! Anyone who preaches that Jesus can’t deliver from sin is a liar.

1 Corinthians 15:1 Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you; unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,

Paul in a few words preaches to us the gospel Jesus died for our sins according to the Scripture, He was buried, and rose again. All for our reconciliation! Jesus said it simply!

Matthew 10:32 "Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. 33 "But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.

1 Peter 2:21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: 22 "Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth"; 23 who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; 24 who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness; by whose stripes you were healed. 25 For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

The cross is the power of God to salvation! He bore our sins in His own body on the tree! True faith in Jesus is a true dying to self and a complete surrender to Jesus. Jesus said if you do not surrender all you can not be His disciple. It is simply faith in Jesus; however Jesus set the standard high at what true faith is!

Galatians 3:8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, "In you all the nations shall be blessed." 9 So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham. 10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them." 11 But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for "the just shall live by faith." 12 Yet the law is not of faith, but "the man who does them shall live by them." 13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree"), 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Those who would be justified by faith would have to accept that Jesus work at the cross could save them from their sin. The thief on the cross declaration demonstrated his faith in Jesus as the Messiah “remember me when you come into Your kingdom”. The work at the cross redeemed us from the curse of the law! We can only receive from God through faith in Jesus Christ and there is no other way to receive from God. Jesus truly ended the hostility between God and man at the cross!

Ephesians 2:14 For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, 15 having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, 16 and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity.

Enmity has been put to death by the cross! Oh that the church would come back to preach the fullness of the cross!

Colossians 1:19 For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, 20 and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.

Peace with God was made exclusively through the blood of Jesus cross!

2 Corinthians 5:19 that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation. 20 Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ's behalf, be reconciled to God. 21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Be reconciled to God! God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them. If we are going to walk in the command to be ambassadors for Christ we must preach the power of the cross to salvation! The Father made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us that we might become the righteousness of God in Jesus Christ!

Galatians 6:14 But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. 15 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but a new creation.

It time for us to boast in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ; there is no other way to become a new creation in Christ Jesus! The true gospel message equals us preach the cross. Shall we determine to know nothing but Jesus Christ and Him crucified? Make your boast in the cross!

(I might get back to this to edit it.) :-)

  1. What most don't know is that Paul was well aware of the term "impute" but never used it in any of the senses most people claim and think.

In my study on this topic of imputed righteousness, the Greek term “logizomai” is the English term for “reckon/impute/credit/etc,” (all terms are basically equivalently used) and when I look up that term in a popular lexicon here is what it is defined as:

    —————-
QUOTE: “This word deals with reality. If I “logizomai” or reckon that my bank book has $25 in it, it has $25 in it. Otherwise I am deceiving myself. This word refers to facts not suppositions.”
    http://tinyurl.com/r92dch
    —————-

The lexicon states this term first and foremost refers to the actual status of something. So if Abraham’s faith is “logizomai as righteousness,” it must be an actually righteous act of faith, otherwise (as the Lexicon says) “I am deceiving myself.” This seems to rule out any notion of an alien righteousness, and instead points to a local/inherent righteousness.

The Lexicon gives other examples where “logizomai” appears, here are some examples:
    ——————-
Rom 3:28 Therefore we conclude [logizomai] that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

Rom 4:4 Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted [logizomai] as a gift but as his due.

Rom 6:11 Likewise reckon [logizomai] ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Rom 8:18 For I reckon [logizomai] that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
    ——————-

Notice in these examples that “logizomai” means to consider the actual truth of an object. In 3:28 Paul ‘reckons’ faith saves while the Law does not, this is a fact, the Law never saves. In 4:4 the worker’s wages are ‘reckoned’ as a debt because the boss is in debt to the worker, not giving a gift to him. In 6:11 the Christian is ‘reckoned’ dead to sin because he is in fact dead to sin. In 8:18 Paul ‘reckons’ the present sufferings as having no comparison to Heavenly glory, and that is true because nothing compares to Heavenly glory.

To use logizomai in the “alien status” way would mean in: (1) 3:28 faith doesn’t really save apart from works, but we are going to go ahead and say it does; (2) 4:4 the boss gives payment to the worker as a gift rather than obligation/debt; (3) 6:11 that we are not really dead to sin but are going to say we are; (4) 8:18 the present sufferings are comparable to Heaven’s glory.
    This cannot be right.

So when the text plainly says “faith is logizomai as righteousness,” I must read that as ‘faith is reckoned as a truly righteous act’, and that is precisely how Paul explains that phrase in 4:18-22. That despite the doubts that could be raised in Abraham’s heart, his faith grew strong and convinced and “that is why his faith was credited as righteousness” (v4:22). This is also confirmed by noting the only other time “credited as righteousness” appears in Scripture, Psalm 106:30-31, where Phinehas’ righteous action was reckoned as such. This is confirmed even more when one compares another similar passage, Hebrews 11:4, where by faith Abel was commended as righteous.

Thanks for responding to our sermon notes. Perhaps to boaster what you say let me share one passage!

John 6:28 Then they said to Him, "What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?" 29 Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent."

The work God has called us to do is to believe in the One He sent! Imputed righteousness is substantive; it is not elusive! The object of our faith must ever be in Jesus Christ and the work He performed at the cross.

    I enjoyed your comments,
    God bless,
