Luke 11:1 Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, "Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples." 2 So He said to them, "When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. 3 Give us day by day our daily bread. 4 And forgive us our sins, For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one." 5 And He said to them, "Which of you shall have a friend, and go to him at midnight and say to him, 'Friend, lend me three loaves; 6 'for a friend of mine has come to me on his journey, and I have nothing to set before him'; 7 "and he will answer from within and say, 'Do not trouble me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give to you'? 8 "I say to you, though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs. 9 "So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 "For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 11 "If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 "Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!"
Jesus was often found praying; many times revelation knowledge was shared with the disciples after Jesus prayed. Jesus begins sharing truths about prayer here in Luke 11 Prayer starts when you can call God your Father. As believers we can hollow His name and pray kingdom prayers. The Father qualified us to be partakers in the kingdom. There is a right and privilege to trust God for your every need and walk with a pure heart. Trusting exclusively in Him shuts out the evil one from having any hold in our lives. Asking seeking , and knocking is foundational in a believers prayer life. If we will be persistent He will give us His good gifts.
Psalm 55:16 As for me, I will call upon God, And the LORD shall save me. 17 Evening and morning and at noon I will pray, and cry aloud, And He shall hear my voice.
God calls us to prayer always. The men of the Bible who had the greatest relationships with God were men of prayer. Just to name a few, Samuel, David, and Daniel.
Matthew 6:5 "And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 6 "But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. 7 "And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.
Jesus here was sharing truths about prayer. Standing out in public and making some beautiful prayer is not where the reward of prayer can be found. It is when you go into intimacy with the Father Himself that prayer will be rewarded with answers from heaven. Do not use vain repetitions as the unbelievers do; notice it is vain repetitions. Men have invented prayers to continue to repeat over and over thinking they will be heard on high. Praying vain (empty) prayers will not bring an answer from heaven. Many have tried to claim not to have repetitious prayer; however it is vain or useless repetitious prayer Jesus taught against. We must leave in order the asking, seeking, and knocking with persistence. The way to make sure our prayer does not become vain is to learn to pray the will of the Father on earth as it as in heaven. The Word of God if full of prayer directives of which we will only deal with a few.
Mark 11:22 So Jesus answered and said to them, "Have faith in God. 23 "For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be removed and be cast into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. 24 "Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them. 25 "And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. 26 "But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses."
Praying with a clean heart is imperative. God has called every believer to walk with forgiveness. If you have not forgiven leave the altar and make it right with the one whom you have ought against. If you are walking without forgiveness your prayers will be hindered.
Luke 9:28 Now it came to pass, about eight days after these sayings, that He took Peter, John, and James and went up on the mountain to pray. 29 As He prayed, the appearance of His face was altered, and His robe became white and glistening. 30 And behold, two men talked with Him, who were Moses and Elijah, 31 who appeared in glory and spoke of His decease which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 But Peter and those with him were heavy with sleep; and when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men who stood with Him. 33 Then it happened, as they were parting from Him, that Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah"; not knowing what he said. 34 While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were fearful as they entered the cloud. 35 And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, "This is My beloved Son. Hear Him!" 36 When the voice had ceased, Jesus was found alone.
One of the greatest revelations of the New Covenant was in the middle of Jesus having a prayer meeting! Moses, Elijah, and Jesus were having a conversation about Jesus going to the cross. The greatest act of all history for all ages was discussed. Peter wanted to build a tabernacle for all three men; however, the Father spoke from heaven making it clear this covenant was based upon the sure foundation of Jesus Christ Himself. “This is My beloved Son. Hear Him!” Moses pointed to Jesus coming, Elijah pointed to Jesus coming, and Jesus was the manifestation of the coming Messiah. Jesus is the one and the revelation came in the middle of Jesus’ prayer meeting with Peter, John and James.
John 16:26 "In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; 27 "for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came forth from God.
Jesus prophesied of the day when the Father would hear and answer our prayer because of our love for Jesus.
Philippians 1:9 And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, 10 that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, 11 being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
Paul the apostle often prayed prayers and it is one place we can find our prayer directive. Get in agreement with the Word and pray that the love of the saints will abound in knowledge and discernment. Pray the Word and your prayer will not be vain but Spirit filled and lead.
Colossians 1:9 For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;
Pray to be filled with the knowledge of His will and wisdom and spiritual understanding. Keep praying the Word. Put the Word in your mouth and speak it! God will bring it to pass.
1 Thessalonians 5:16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 Do not quench the Spirit.
The Word is filled with prayer directives. Pray without ceasing with thanksgiving; this is the will of God! People often ask me what is the will of God for their lives; pray, pray, pray. Hear God’s directives!
2 Thessalonians 1:11 Therefore we also pray always for you that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfill all the good pleasure of His goodness and the work of faith with power,
1 Timothy 2:8 I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting;
James 5:13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. 18 And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.
2 Thessalonians 3:1 Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may run swiftly and be glorified, just as it is with you,
Jude 1:20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
Ephesians 6:18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints;
Ephesians 1:15 Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, 16 do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers: 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, 18 the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power.
Philippians 4:6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Matthew 9: 38 "Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest."
My prayer is that when there is a call for prayer there will be sanctuaries filled with prayer warriors! We must learn to pray and declare the will of God!
