The Shadow The Pattern The Substance

Jesus is the substance of the shadows and patterns found in the practices of the law of Moses. Comparing and contrasting the two covenants exposes the power and strength of the new covenant ratified by Jesus Christ.
The Shadow The Pattern The Substance

Hebrews 10:1  For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect.  2  For then would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins.  3  But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year.  4  For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.

The law was a shadow and pattern of the good things to come!  Under the law the repeated sacrifices could not make the worshiper perfect.  The sacrifice was only a shadow of what was to come.  A shadow can do nothing but make a refection of things of substance.  Those who desire to continue to live for God under the law are faced with quiet a dilemma because a shadow does not have the power to make the worshiper who approaches perfect.  However, that which has substance has the power to bring perfection.  I’m jumping way ahead!  While we examine what the shadow could not do, it gives a clear refection of what the substance can do.  The Most Holy Sacrifice of substance, Jesus Christ, makes provision to take away the consciousness of sins.  While the blood of bulls and goats could not take away sins, the blood of Jesus takes away the sins and nails it to the cross.  Again, I’m getting ahead of myself.

Hebrews 10:5  Therefore, when He came into the world, He said: "Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, But a body You have prepared for Me.  6  In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin You had no pleasure.  7  Then I said, 'Behold, I have come; In the volume of the book it is written of Me; To do Your will, O God.'"  8  Previously saying, "Sacrifice and offering, burnt offerings, and offerings for sin You did not desire, nor had pleasure in them" (which are offered according to the law), 9  then He said, "Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God." He takes away the first that He may establish the second.

Jesus Christ came in the volume of the book!  The prophets of old told of His coming!  It is the will of God to take away the 1st covenant (The law of Moses) that He may establish the second ( The covenant of grace and truth through Jesus Christ).  He truly take away the first so that the second can be established.

Hebrews 10:10  By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.  11  And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.

By the will of God the Father, we (the believer) have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ ONCE  FOR ALL.  Do you dare believe that the strength of Jesus Christ sacrifice can sanctify you?!  It is a once for all work of grace.  Jesus will never have to die again!  The shadow had to have the priests stand and minister daily and the sacrifice was repeated over and over and it still never took the sin away!  Jesus’ one time offering for sin took our sin away!  The sacrifice of this covenant was perfect and it was a perfecting work once and for all time!

Hebrews 10:12  But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, 13  from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool. 14  For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.

Understanding between our spirit, soul, and body is so important.  By one offering of Jesus Christ, He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.  When one surrenders to the Lordship of Jesus Christ there is a joining Spirit to spirit.  There is a perfecting of our spirits.  We call it imputed righteousness.  May I remind you of Hebrews 4.

Hebrews 4:12  For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Perfection is becoming a new creation in Christ Jesus.  The first dividing is perfecting your spirit.  There remains a work to be done in your soul which presents us with the need to renew our mind with the word of God.  After Jesus purged us from our sin forever, He sat down at the right hand of God.  His sitting down declares the work is finished.

John 4:22  "You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. 23  "But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.  24  "God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."

Adam and Eve died a spiritual death the day they partook of the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.  Jesus brought us restoration restoring the connection Spirit to spirit!

Hebrews 12:9  Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live?

God the Father is the Father of spirits.  It is our spirit that a work of perfection is done.

Hebrews 12:22  But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels,  23  to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect,

Don’t you see?  God does a work in the spirit of man a perfected work according to Hebrews 10:14.

Romans 3:25  whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, 26  to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

The Father is the just One and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus!  Yes indeed, a perfected work in our spirit.  A progressive work in our soul, and our bodies join with creation waiting for that perfected work in our bodies.  The substance of  the sacrifice of Jesus brings us a purged conscience and a spirit reconciled back to the Father.

Hebrews 10:15  But the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us; for after He had said before,  16  "This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the LORD: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,"  17  then He adds, "Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more."  18  Now where there is remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.  19  Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus,  20  by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh,  21  and having a High Priest over the house of God,  22  let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

Jesus has brought us out of the darkness.  The veil that separated was now torn in two and access has been opened.  The word is now written upon the believers heart.  The sins and lawless deeds will be remember no more!  The greatness of the sacrifice brings us boldness to enter into the Holiest by the blood of Jesus!  That is why there is such an anointing when we are singing about the blood.  It is what has provided the way into the presence of God.  Trust totally and completely in your perfect High Priest.  We can approach God with a true heart in full assurance of faith!  My sins are gone I’m set free!

John 8:34  Jesus answered them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.  35  "And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever.  36  "Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.

Hallelujah I’m free from this world of sin by the washing in the blood of Jesus.  Jesus Christ is the substance of all the shadows and patterns found in the covenant of Moses.

Colossians 2:13  And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses,  14  having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.  15  Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.  16  So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths,  17  which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ
