The Rest of God

Hebrews 4:9 There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. 10 For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His. 11 Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience.

There is a rest for the people of God. The writer of Hebrews declared that whoever has entered into the rest of God has ceased from his own works, as God did from His. Then the KJV declares for us to labor to enter that rest. What a dichotomy, labor to enter the rest of God. The very first mention of redemption is that God rested on the seventh day! Some have wondered why the command to the Israelites to rest on the seventh day. It testified that there would be a rest for the people of God. The seventh day was a shadow and pattern that Jesus fulfilled when He came to earth.

Colossians 2:16 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, 17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.

Hebrews 9:9 It was symbolic for the present time in which both gifts and sacrifices are offered which cannot make him who performed the service perfect in regard to the conscience; 10 concerned only with foods and drinks, various washings, and fleshly ordinances imposed until the time of reformation. 11 But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation.

Jesus Christ is the way to the rest of God and there is no other way. The fleshly ordinances were imposed until the time of reformation. Jesus is the reformation doing a perfect work to allow us into the rest of God.

Matthew 11:28 "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 "For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."
Such a familiar passage and yet it holds the revelation of entering into the rest of God. Jesus gave such an awesome invitation to all who labor and are heavy laden! His promise is to give us rest! Far too many believers are still loaded with burdens God never called them to carry and busy with labor He never called them to work.

Jesus’ call is to take His yoke upon ourselves. Only under His yoke can we learn from Him. Learn from His gentleness and lowliness of heart. This is when we can find rest for our souls. Jesus' yoke is easy and His burden is light. There are some burdens we simply need to unyoke from! It is time to labor to enter into His rest. If you are weighted down and depressed, God has never intended for you to be there. Some have been under the burden so long it has become the normal way to live. However there is a calling from God to come up higher and live in His rest.

Jesus is the sin bearer!

John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

Jesus was manifested to destroy the works of the devil; Jesus is the perfect lamb that has taken away the sin of the world. Many believers try to deal with their sin outside of the rest of God. It only brings torment and no victory over the sin. Sin, repent, and a promise to do better will not bring the rest one looks for.

In the Old Testament when the worshipper came for atonement the sacrifice was examined to see if it was clean enough and pure enough to atone for the sin of the worshipper. It is time to enter into the rest of God and when atonement is needed examine the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

1 John 2:1 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.

If we, the children of God, sin we must run to our Advocate Jesus Christ the righteous one. Jesus Himself is the propitiation for our sins. The Father looks upon the perfect sacrifice and is appeased by the strength of the sacrifice offered. Resting in the strength of the sacrifice leads us in to right living. His grace teaches us to deny ungodliness and walk in righteousness provided by the Lamb Himself. If we sin repentance and advocacy of Jesus Christ is where we find victory.

Hebrews 1:3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

Resting in the perfected work of Christ is the Sabbath rest we look for and there is no other true place of rest.

Romans 6:9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. 10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. 11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

“Likewise” what a beautiful word of truth. Like Jesus died to sin once for all, you reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin. Like Jesus' life, living to God you also live as alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. This is the place of rest Jesus has called you to!

Hebrews 12:1 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Our victory over the weight and or sin is found in looking exclusively to Jesus the author and finisher of our faith. Turn your eyes upon Jesus and the victory He has won is yours, thanks to the work of the cross.

Jesus is the anchor of the soul. He is both sure and steadfast!
Hebrews 6:19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil,

Jesus is your forerunner! You are expected in the throne room of God; Jesus said come!

Hebrews 6:20 where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

Jesus is the anchor for your soul. Jesus is your hiding place.

Psalms 91:1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust."

Psalms 32:7 You are my hiding place; You shall preserve me from trouble; You shall surround me with songs of deliverance. Selah

Jesus is your peace!

Jesus calls us to enter His rest; it is time for the Word of God to be in our mouth!

2 Corinthians 4:13 And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, "I believed and therefore I spoke," we also believe and therefore speak,

Put the word of God in your mouth and speak it; it will bring rest to your soul!

Isaiah 59:21 "As for Me," says the LORD, "this is My covenant with them: My Spirit who is upon you, and My words which I have put in your mouth, shall not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your descendants, nor from the mouth of your descendants' descendants," says the LORD, "from this time and forevermore." 60:1 Arise, shine; For your light has come! And the glory of the LORD is risen upon you.

Jesus will perfect that which concerns you!

Philippians 1:6 being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;

James 5:11 Indeed we count them blessed who endure. You have heard of the perseverance of Job and seen the end intended by the Lord; that the Lord is very compassionate and merciful.

Jesus has an intended end and during the journey He calls you into His rest. You have not been forgotten!
